Rey Sotelo: Reviving a Legend in Motorcycling

A Dream Realized

In the world of motorcycles, few names resonate as deeply as Indian Motorcycle Corporation. At the heart of its revival is Rey Sotelo, the visionary founder and chief who turned a dream into reality. The pivotal moment came when Murray Smith, CEO of Indian Motorcycle Corp., reached out to Rey’s company, California Motorcycle Company (CMC), to create the prototype for the new Indian Chief. Within a month, Murray and a group of investors visited to see the prototype, and after falling in love with it, they made an audacious decision—purchasing CMC on the spot to produce the iconic motorcycle.

From Humble Beginnings to Industry Leader

Rey’s journey began at just 21 years old when he opened a small motorcycle accessory company. His rise from a young entrepreneur to the “Big Guy” representing one of the most storied names in motorcycling history is nothing short of extraordinary. It required not just talent, but a blend of determination and tenacity. Rey faced the challenge head-on, crafting a motorcycle that honored the dignity of the Indian marquee while paying homage to the loyal enthusiasts who had supported the brand through thick and thin.

His innovative designs and commitment to quality breathed new life into a legacy that had been dormant for years, drawing attention from motorcycle enthusiasts and collectors around the globe. The new Indian Chief stood as a testament to the spirit of the original models while introducing modern advancements that catered to today’s riders.

A Legacy of Achievement

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the motorcycle industry, Rey Sotelo was honored as the first recipient of the JC “Pappy” Hoel Outstanding Achievement Award at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame. This accolade solidified his status not just as a builder of motorcycles, but as a key figure in the preservation and celebration of motorcycle history.

Rey retired as the CEO of Indian Motorcycle in 2002, leaving behind a legacy that would influence generations of riders. His passion for motorcycling and commitment to excellence set a standard that continues to inspire new generations in the industry.

The Indian Motorcycle Legacy Continues

Rey Sotelo’s journey is a shining example of how one person's vision can revive a historic brand and create a lasting impact on the motorcycle community. Under his leadership, Indian Motorcycle regained its place as a premier name in the industry, attracting riders who appreciate the craftsmanship, heritage, and thrill of riding an Indian bike.

As the brand continues to innovate and expand its offerings, the spirit of Rey Sotelo's vision lives on, reminding all of us that the road ahead is as exciting as the journey that brought us here.
