Bob Summer: A Lifelong Champion for Motorcyclist Rights

For Bob Summer, motorcycling is more than just a hobby—it’s a way of life, a passion deeply interwoven with his dedication to protecting and preserving the freedoms of riders everywhere. Since 1989, Bob has been a stalwart advocate for the rights of motorcyclists, lending his leadership and experience to numerous organizations and initiatives that have made a lasting impact on the motorcycle community in Minnesota and beyond.

The Early Years: Building ABATE of Minnesota

Bob’s journey into motorcycle rights began when he became a founding member of the Flatlander’s Chapter of ABATE of Minnesota, a key organization that fights for the rights and freedoms of motorcyclists. Not only was he a founding member, but he also served as the chapter’s very first president, setting the tone for what would become a lifelong commitment to the cause.

His leadership skills and dedication quickly propelled him to larger roles within the organization. Bob served as the District Director and later as the State Coordinator of ABATE of Minnesota, guiding the group through some of its most critical battles. As State Coordinator, Bob’s influence extended statewide, helping build a powerful and united front against overregulation and policies that threatened the freedom of the open road.

Even after stepping down as State Coordinator, Bob remained deeply committed to the cause, serving as a Trustee during the tenure of four successive State Coordinators. This level of continuity and commitment made him a central figure within ABATE of Minnesota, ensuring that the organization remained focused and effective in its mission.

A Voice for Safety and Advocacy

In addition to his work with ABATE, Bob also served on the Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Advisory Committee, providing a much-needed voice for motorcyclists in discussions about rider safety and education. Through his work on the committee, Bob was instrumental in shaping policies that would ensure safer roads for riders while maintaining the spirit of freedom that motorcycling represents.

Bob’s expertise and dedication made him a natural partner for other influential figures and organizations in the motorcycle rights community. He collaborated closely with Bob Illingworth of the Minnesota Motorcycle Riders Association (MMRA), as well as national organizations like the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM). These partnerships were crucial in coordinating activities that benefited motorcyclists not only in Minnesota but across the nation.

A Legacy of Service

Throughout his decades-long involvement, Bob has consistently shown that his commitment to motorcycling extends far beyond his personal enjoyment of riding. He has fought tirelessly to protect the freedoms of all motorcyclists, working behind the scenes to ensure that future generations can enjoy the same sense of freedom that he and his wife Sue cherish.

His leadership, wisdom, and collaborative spirit have earned him the respect and admiration of fellow riders and advocates. Bob’s unwavering dedication to the cause of motorcyclist rights and his ability to inspire others have made him a true champion for the community.

Still Riding for Freedom

Today, Bob and his wife Sue continue to ride their motorcycles, embodying the very freedoms he has spent his life defending. Their commitment to the lifestyle and the cause remains as strong as ever. Bob’s involvement with ABATE of Minnesota is a testament to his enduring belief in the importance of standing up for the rights of all riders.

For Bob Summer, the fight for motorcyclist rights is not just a chapter in his life—it’s the whole story. His dedication to the cause and his leadership within ABATE of Minnesota have left an indelible mark on the motorcycling community. Whether he’s riding the open roads of Minnesota or strategizing with fellow activists, Bob’s passion and commitment serve as a reminder that freedom isn’t just about the ability to ride—it’s about ensuring that right for everyone who shares his love for the journey.

His legacy is not only measured by the miles he’s ridden but by the miles of freedom he’s preserved for us all.
