Christian Motorcyclists Association: Riding for a Higher Purpose

In 1972, Herb Shreve bought his first motorcycle — a decision that would forever change his life and the lives of countless others. What started as a simple father-son bonding experience quickly evolved into something much greater. Two years later, at his first motorcycle rally, Shreve encountered a sea of riders who seemed to lack spiritual direction. It was then that the seed for the Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA) was planted. As he looked around at the bustling rally, Shreve realized there was a need for a presence that combined the passion for motorcycling with the power of faith.

“I saw a massive crowd of motorcyclists who did not know Jesus Christ as their personal savior,” he would later recall. This observation spurred him into action. After several meetings with like-minded friends and much prayer, Shreve contacted an attorney in the spring of 1975, officially establishing the CMA as a non-profit organization. What began as a small group of riders united by their faith has grown into a worldwide movement, sharing a message of hope, compassion, and salvation across highways and byways.

From Humble Beginnings to a Global Movement

Today, the Christian Motorcyclists Association has become a beacon of faith in the motorcycling community. With over 1,000 chapters in the United States alone, and more chapters through the CMA International Ministry, the organization has spread its message far and wide. CMA has had over 160,000 applicants for membership over the years, making it one of the largest and most influential motorcycle ministries in the world.

The CMA’s interdenominational approach makes it welcoming to people from all Christian backgrounds. Members span a diverse range of ages, professions, and riding styles, but they share a common purpose: reaching people for Christ through the joy of motorcycling. Whether it’s at local bike nights, massive national rallies, or on long-distance rides, CMA members are on a mission to make a positive impact in the lives of those they meet.

A Mission of Faith on Two Wheels

The Christian Motorcyclists Association’s mission statement is clear and compelling: “To inspire our leaders and members to be the most organized, advanced, equipped, financially stable organization, full of integrity in the motorcycling industry and the Kingdom of God.” CMA isn’t just about riding motorcycles; it’s about being a force for good within the community. Members strive to live out their faith in a way that’s authentic and relatable, serving as a reminder that the freedom of the open road can be experienced alongside the freedom that comes from a relationship with Christ.

Their motto, “Changing the world, one heart at a time,” perfectly encapsulates the CMA’s vision. It’s not about converting entire crowds in a single moment; it’s about making meaningful, one-on-one connections. Whether through a simple conversation, a helping hand, or a shared prayer, CMA members aim to touch lives in profound and lasting ways.

Making an Impact

One of the CMA’s hallmark initiatives is the Run for the Son, an annual fundraising event that has grown significantly since its inception. What started as a small effort to raise money for missionary work has blossomed into a global campaign that funds outreach projects around the world. Through Run for the Son, CMA has supported the translation of Bibles into different languages, provided transportation for missionaries, and funded local community projects that address both spiritual and physical needs.

In addition to Run for the Son, CMA members can be found volunteering at rallies, organizing charity rides, and offering roadside assistance to any motorist in need — no strings attached. The CMA’s presence at events like Daytona Bike Week, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and Laconia Motorcycle Week provides a unique opportunity for ministry. By setting up hospitality tents, offering water and shade, and simply being available for conversation, CMA has earned a reputation for being a welcoming, supportive presence in the motorcycling world.

Riding with Purpose

Herb Shreve’s vision for the Christian Motorcyclists Association has become a powerful force in the motorcycling community. What began as a small, faith-driven initiative now has a global reach, changing lives and spreading hope wherever its members ride. Shreve’s legacy is not just the organization itself, but the countless lives that have been touched by CMA’s outreach, from the highways of America to the rural roads of distant countries.

The story of CMA is a reminder that sometimes, the simplest beginnings — like a father and son’s first motorcycle ride — can lead to extraordinary things. Through prayer, passion, and perseverance, Herb Shreve’s dream grew into a worldwide ministry dedicated to serving others. The next time you see a group of CMA riders on the road, know that they’re riding for more than just the thrill of the ride. They’re riding for a purpose — to change the world, one heart at a time.
