Myke Shelby: A Life of Advocacy and Adventure
Myke Shelby, affectionately known as “New York Myke,” has led a remarkable life marked by service, activism, and a deep passion for motorcycles. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Myke’s journey took a significant turn at eighteen when he volunteered to join the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. His military service included directing air strikes for the Army’s 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam, but it was also during this time that he became an active civil rights advocate while stationed in Mississippi. This duality of service instilled in him a fierce commitment to fighting for justice and freedom, a theme that would define his life.
After his honorable discharge, Myke attended The University of South Carolina before returning to New York, where he established a real estate business at JFK International Airport. He quickly became a key figure in the local community, serving as the founding president of the JFK Airport Rotary Club and the president of the JFK Airport Chamber of Commerce. However, in 1987, seeking a new adventure, Myke relocated his family of four children to California. By 1993, he had realized a dream when he became the proud owner of San Diego Harley-Davidson.
Myke embodies the spirit of the American Dream, believing that every citizen has the power to fight for what they believe in and achieve their goals. His dedication to this cause led him to support numerous political candidates and embark on a career in radio talk shows following the implementation of California's helmet law in 1992. During the Republican Convention in San Diego in 1996, Myke collaborated with U.S. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell and Mike Osborne of Easy Rider magazine to organize a massive gathering of 10,000 motorcycles, showcasing the power of unity in the biker community.
In March 2006, a significant event unfolded when the San Diego City Council voted to remove the 43-foot high cross atop Mt. Soledad, a cherished War Memorial. Myke, determined to preserve the memorial, filed a petition that resulted in a 77% public vote to keep the memorial “where it is, as is.” That same year, he made a bid for the mayoral seat in San Diego, campaigning for freedom from what he viewed as an out-of-control government. His efforts contributed to keeping the cross standing, despite ongoing threats from organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union.
Myke’s commitment to service extends beyond local politics. He is a life member of various organizations, including the Air Commando Association, the 101st Airborne Association, and the NRA, and holds honorary memberships in several motorcycle clubs. As a dedicated rider, he logs at least 50,000 miles annually on his Harley-Davidson, participating in significant events like the annual Memorial Day ride to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, where he served as the keynote speaker in 1998.
His sense of duty was particularly evident following the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Myke rushed to New York City to assist in recovery efforts, raising funds for the Port Authority Police Department Widows and Orphans Fund. He also played a pivotal role in delivering Harley-Davidson police bikes and a generous donation to the Red Cross, further cementing his legacy as a community leader.
Today, Myke Shelby is celebrated as an inductee of the Sturgis Freedom Fighter Hall of Fame and remains active in political advocacy, working to repeal the helmet law and promote motorcycling freedom. He continues to engage with the motorcycle community through his work at San Diego Harley-Davidson, where the management duties are now transitioning to his children, allowing him to focus on his passion for riding and activism. Myke shares his insights and experiences through a podcast on NEWYORKMYKE.COM, reaching a broad audience eager to hear the tales of a true American icon.
Myke Shelby’s life is a testament to the power of advocacy, service, and the love of the open road, inspiring countless individuals to join the fight for freedom and justice.
