Dal Smilie

Champion of Motorcycle Rights

With over 35 years of activism under his belt, Dal has made significant contributions to motorcycle rights on both on- and off-road issues. His journey as an advocate began early in his riding career, and he has spent 25 years on the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Board of Directors. Notably, he holds the distinction of being the youngest person ever elected to the board and is recognized for his longevity in service.

Dal played a crucial role in the establishment of the AMA Hall of Fame Museum, making the motion to start it and serving as the Chairman of the Board for many years. His commitment to the motorcycling community is further demonstrated through his volunteer work as an AMA Field Representative, during which he successfully sold over 14,000 memberships.

A Commitment to Safety

Dal’s advocacy extends beyond just rights; he has been instrumental in promoting rider safety. He lobbied for Montana’s rider-funded safety training program and has been appointed by four Montana governors to the Montana Motorcycle Safety Advisory Committee, where he has served as Chair. In 1995, Dal’s relentless efforts in this arena earned him the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s top annual ‘Award of Excellence.’

Leadership in the Community

A forward thinker, Dal was a Charter Member of both the Motorcycle Riders Foundation and ABATE of Montana. He also contributes to the Montana Trail Vehicle Riders Association, ensuring that riders' voices are heard and represented at every level. Beyond his advocacy work, Dal served as Chief Legal Counsel for a major state agency and currently runs the Montana Consumer Protection Office.

A Veteran and Scout

Dal is also a proud Vietnam veteran and an Eagle Scout, showcasing his commitment to service and leadership in various facets of his life. His dedication to these values has permeated his work in motorcycling rights and community engagement.

Life Beyond Advocacy

Now, much of Dal’s time is spent on the open road, where he enjoys camping and restoring vintage campers and trailers. He serves as a Representative for Tin Can Tourists (TCT) and is actively involved in running their annual Vintage Trailer Camp and Picnic, combining his love for motorcycling with a passion for vintage travel.

Legacy of Advocacy

Dal Smilie’s remarkable journey is a testament to his enduring commitment to motorcycling rights, safety, and community. With decades of experience as an activist, rider, and leader, he has paved the way for future generations of motorcyclists. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide those who ride, ensuring that the spirit of motorcycling remains strong for years to come.
