Honoring Simon Milward: A Legacy of Advocacy and Passion for Motorcycling
From Corporate Success to Motorcycle Advocacy

In 1989, Simon Milward made a life-changing decision that would lead him down a path of advocacy and support for motorcyclists. Leaving behind a lucrative position with a leading British printing company, Simon embarked on a journey to dedicate his career to something he truly believed in: the Motorcycle Action Group United Kingdom (MAG UK). This bold move marked the beginning of Simon’s lifelong commitment to championing the rights and interests of motorcyclists.

Building a European Movement

By 1992, Simon had established the Brussels headquarters of the Federation of European Motorcyclists (FEM) in Belgium, taking on the role of General Secretary. With unwavering determination, he navigated the complex European Union landscape, coordinating efforts toward specific legislative targets that would greatly benefit motorcyclists. His relentless advocacy led to bikers being among the first citizens to reap the rewards of the democratic changes brought about by the Maastricht Treaty.

Under Simon's leadership, FEM emerged as a well-respected and effective lobbying group within the EU institutions. In 1998, FEM merged with the European Motorcyclists Association (EMA) to form the Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations (FEMA), with Simon continuing as General Secretary. His dedication resulted in FEMA comprising 22 national riders’ rights organizations from 18 European countries, solidifying a united front for motorcyclists across the continent.

A Global Impact Through Riding

After a serious car accident left him hospitalized, Simon chose to turn his near-tragedy into a catalyst for change. In 2000, he embarked on an ambitious journey to ride his motorcycle around the world to raise funds for international medical aid. This initiative laid the groundwork for what is now known as the Millennium Ride. Simon’s commitment to humanitarian causes was further exemplified in May 2002 when he helped establish a pilot project called Health for All, funded by the charity Motorcycle Outreach.

A Charismatic Leader

Those who knew Simon often remarked on his amiable personality, infectious smile, and unwavering passion for motorcycling. He loved riding motorcycles and cherished the community of riders, dedicating himself to ensuring that their rights were protected. His enthusiasm was contagious, and he worked tirelessly to make a positive impact on the motorcycling world.

A Tragic Loss

Tragically, Simon Milward's life was cut short on March 4, 2005, when he lost his life in a road accident in Mali. Just before his untimely death, he received a nomination to the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame, a testament to his significant contributions to the motorcycling community. At only 40 years old, Simon left behind a legacy that is deeply missed by his friends, family, and fellow riders.

A Lasting Legacy

Simon Milward’s unwavering dedication to advocating for motorcyclists’ rights, coupled with his charismatic spirit, has left an indelible mark on the motorcycling world. His efforts not only united riders across Europe but also inspired countless individuals to fight for their rights and pursue their passions. As we remember Simon, we honor a true champion of motorcycling and a beloved figure whose contributions continue to resonate within the community. His legacy serves as a reminder of the power of passion and advocacy in making a difference in the lives of others.
