John Parham: The Visionary Behind J&P Cycles

At the tender age of 16, John Parham took a bold step that would shape his life forever. Running away from home for two days, he sought to prove to his parents just how much owning a BSA motorcycle meant to him. Eventually, they relented, and John immediately transformed his new bike into a chopper—a clear sign that he was destined for a life of two wheels and adventure.

The Birth of a Dream

In 1975, just two years after graduating high school, Parham's dream took a significant leap forward when he and a partner opened D&J Cycles in Anamosa, Iowa. The young entrepreneur balanced his time between his motorcycle shop and a local factory job, working the day shift with his mechanic while his partner covered the afternoons. This juggling act allowed him to pursue his passion while maintaining financial stability.

As the business began to grow, Parham’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to explore new opportunities. In 1979, he started attending weekend swap meets with increasing frequency, buying and selling used parts to motorcycle enthusiasts. This venture would set the stage for his future successes.

Full-Time Commitment

In 1982, Parham made a pivotal decision: he left his factory job to focus entirely on his motorcycle business. His dedication paid off in 1987 when he published the first J&P Cycles catalog, a modest 24-page tool for riders that quickly exceeded even his expectations. This catalog would evolve into a comprehensive resource for motorcyclists across the nation, solidifying J&P Cycles’ reputation as a go-to source for motorcycle parts and accessories.

Building a Motorcycle Community

Parham's vision extended beyond his catalog. He recognized the importance of community within the motorcycle world and began promoting events throughout Iowa and Wisconsin. Thus, J&P Promotions was born. What started as a local endeavor soon expanded nationwide, with over 50 annual events that brought riders together to celebrate their passion.

From motorcycle swap meets and bike shows to hill climbs and dirt track races, Parham's influence was felt throughout the motorcycle community. He played a crucial role in the revival of All Harley Drag Racing on the West Coast by creating the AHDRA Western Drag Race division. Additionally, his "Bike Show Super Series" brought together both metric and V-twin motorcycles in a series of celebrated shows across the country.

One of Parham's crowning achievements was his involvement in the Davenport Antique Flat Track race. As a true vintage enthusiast, he helped start and promote this annual event, which remains a highlight during the Blackhawk Chapter’s Annual Meeting of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America.

A Legacy of Excellence

In 2004, J&P Cycles celebrated its 25th anniversary, and Parham's contributions to the industry were recognized with the prestigious Best Independent Dealer award from Dealernews Magazine. His keen understanding of riders’ needs and his ability to deliver products efficiently and economically were hallmarks of his success. Parham’s vision, combined with his exceptional talent for anticipating trends, allowed him to not only live his dream but to thrive in the motorcycle industry.

Today, John Parham's legacy continues through J&P Cycles, a testament to his unwavering passion for motorcycles and the community he helped build. His journey from a young boy with a dream to a successful entrepreneur serves as an inspiration for motorcyclists everywhere, proving that with determination and vision, anything is possible on the open road.
