John Reed: The Innovator of Custom Motorcycle Design

In the world of custom motorcycle building, few names resonate as powerfully as John Reed. A pioneer in custom motorcycle design and product engineering, Reed has dedicated over two decades of his life to creating unique motorcycle components and machines that embody innovation and craftsmanship.

A Passion Ignited

Reed's journey began in his late twenties when he realized his passion for building custom bikes and parts. This passion led him to establish his own customizing business, Uncle Bunts Chop Shop. With a flair for design and engineering, he quickly made a name for himself in the motorcycle community. His work garnered attention, and soon he was winning awards at various motorcycle shows, including the prestigious Best Engineering award at the ISCA shows in Los Angeles and San Diego for his Supercharged Triumph shipped directly from the UK.

Concept to Reality

John Reed’s talents extended beyond just building bikes for enthusiasts. He began collaborating with major motorcycle manufacturers, designing concept bikes that would redefine custom styling. Notably, he created the stunning Virago show bike for Yamaha Europe, a project that showcased his ability to blend innovation with aesthetic appeal. His success at the Oakland Roadster Show further solidified his reputation; his bike, Telesis, not only won the show but also clinched the ISCA Championships in 1984, a testament to his design prowess.

A Legacy of Innovation

In 2005, Reed’s influence was felt on a grand scale when Custom Chrome, a leading supplier of aftermarket motorcycle parts, sold over 5,900 parts designed by him. His commitment to excellence and creativity remained unwavering, even as he transitioned to California to work full-time for Custom Chrome. Despite his corporate responsibilities, Reed continued to build bikes from his home shop in his spare time, a clear indication of his relentless dedication to the craft.

Reed's mind is a constant whirlpool of ideas; he is perpetually innovating, designing, and conceptualizing new parts, manufacturing methods, and improved handling techniques for motorcycles. His ability to transform raw materials into stunning mechanical masterpieces is driven by his profound passion for motorcycling.

Craftsmanship Redefined

“Reed is the type of guy all craftsmen aspire to be like,” says Howard Kelly, editor of Hot Bike Magazine. “He creates things as a way of expressing himself. He can do it all, too. When he has a tool in his hands, time becomes irrelevant. The only thing that matters is transforming an inanimate piece of metal into part of a soon-to-be-alive creation.”

A Lasting Impact

John Reed’s contributions to the motorcycle industry go far beyond the parts he designs or the bikes he builds; he embodies the spirit of innovation that drives the custom motorcycle community. His relentless pursuit of excellence and creativity inspires both seasoned builders and newcomers alike. As he continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in motorcycle design, John Reed stands as a beacon of craftsmanship, creativity, and passion, forever changing the landscape of custom motorcycling.
