Gary N. Sellers: A Legacy of Freedom Fighting for Motorcyclists' Rights

Gary N. Sellers has long been a beacon of hope and resilience in the fight for motorcyclists' rights, embodying the true spirit of a freedom fighter since the mid-1960s. Before organized motorcyclist rights groups even existed, Sellers was already paving the way for change and advocacy on behalf of riders across the nation.

A Trailblazer in Advocacy

Throughout his illustrious career, which culminated in his retirement from motorcyclist rights on December 31, 2000, Sellers held various influential positions within ABATE of Ohio, Inc., including Chairman of the Board of Directors, Chairman of the Political Action Committee, and Legislative Agent (Lobbyist). His impact on motorcyclist rights in Ohio and beyond has been profound, and his dedication has earned him a respected place in the annals of motorcycling history.

Sellers was also a Charter Member of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), where he served on the board of directors and continued to contribute as an Ex-Officio Board Member for six years. His commitment to the cause has left an indelible mark on the motorcycling community.

Working Within the System

Realizing that traditional protest rides around the Ohio Statehouse were not yielding the desired results, Sellers made the strategic decision to work within the political system. As a lobbyist for ABATE of Ohio, Inc., he played an instrumental role in several key legislative victories. Notable achievements during his tenure include the repeal of Ohio’s helmet law, the passage of legislation that allocated four dollars from every motorcycle registration into a fund for rider education, and the successful introduction of the “Applegate Amendment,” which removed motorcycle-specific language from the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991.

Guided by Values and Mentorship

Sellers credits much of his determination and character to the teachings of his mother and grandfather, who he describes as his greatest mentors, heroes, and supporters. After returning home from his service in Vietnam, he shared his frustrations about motorcycle parking issues with his mother. In response, she expressed her admiration for his unwavering loyalty to friends, his ability to speak his mind, and his dedication to his causes.

From his grandfather, Sellers carries two invaluable lessons: that a person’s word is their most precious possession and that true friendship is life’s greatest reward. These principles have guided him throughout his advocacy work, reinforcing his commitment to integrity and community.

A Relentless Pursuit of Justice

For Gary N. Sellers, the fight for motorcyclists' rights has been a lifelong passion. He believes that “anyone that is pure of heart is never satisfied, as we always believe that we could have done more.” This relentless pursuit of justice and equality is what has driven him to continue advocating for motorcyclists long after his official retirement.

Sellers’ journey serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of one individual’s voice and determination to effect change. His legacy is not just about the victories won but also about the spirit of camaraderie and support he fostered among fellow riders. As motorcyclists continue to navigate the ever-changing landscape of legislation and advocacy, Gary N. Sellers stands as a symbol of hope and resilience, a true champion of freedom on two wheels.
