Charlie St. Clair
Charlie St. Clair: Champion of the Motorcycle Community

Charlie St. Clair’s journey into the world of motorcycling started over 30 years ago with a simple desire: the freedom of the open road. Like so many others, he was drawn to the thrill of riding, the independence, and the camaraderie of fellow bikers. But for Charlie, what began as a hobby transformed into a lifelong passion and eventually, a career that would impact riders across the nation. His first cross-country trek to Sturgis in 1976 marked the beginning of a tradition that would shape his life. With the exception of one year, when a broken leg kept him off his bike, Charlie has made the pilgrimage to Sturgis every summer since.

Over the years, that love of riding became something much larger when Charlie took on the role of Executive Director of Laconia Motorcycle Week in New Hampshire. Now in his seventeenth year in the position, Charlie has been instrumental in growing the rally’s attendance, bringing hundreds of thousands of visitors to the region each year. His efforts have turned Laconia Motorcycle Week into one of the most celebrated motorcycle events in the country, standing proudly alongside the legendary rallies of Sturgis and Daytona.

But Charlie’s impact goes far beyond managing a successful rally. He has dedicated himself to ensuring that motorcyclists receive fair treatment and respect, both on and off the road. Working year-round, he has become an outspoken advocate against discrimination targeting bikers. Drawing on a lifetime of friendships formed at rallies and events across the nation, Charlie has built a network of support that helps protect and promote the rights of all riders.

A Multifaceted Career Rooted in Passion

Charlie St. Clair has worn many hats in his life: history teacher, businessman, restaurant owner, and almost a lawyer—he was just a few credits shy of a law degree when the opportunity with the Laconia Motorcycle Week Association came along. But it was his love of motorcycling that ultimately guided his career path. And though he considers his time at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally each year to be a vacation, even there he is hard at work, advocating for the interests of motorcyclists and spreading the message of unity among riders.

Through his work, Charlie has successfully bridged the gap between motorcycle enthusiasts and those for whom biking is a lifestyle. He strives to create an environment where everyone, from the casual hobbyist to the hardcore biker, feels welcome and included. Whether it’s in New Hampshire, at a rally in Daytona, or at an International Motorcycle Show, Charlie brings with him the spirit of Sturgis: a spirit of camaraderie and brotherhood that inspires others to come together and celebrate what makes motorcycling special.

The Man Behind the Rally

Those who know Charlie St. Clair will tell you that he’s more than just a rally organizer. He’s a storyteller, a mentor, and a living reminder of what it means to be a true motorcyclist. While he may be recognized for his leadership and advocacy, Charlie’s charm comes from his authenticity. He’s not afraid to roll up his sleeves and get his hands dirty—whether it’s dealing with the logistical challenges of managing a large-scale rally or spending time with fellow bikers on the road.

In Sturgis, many know Charlie by the distinctive riding outfit he wears—a patched-up set of riding clothes that he’s owned since his first ride to the rally in 1976. While some might call it a practical choice, those close to him know there’s more to it than that. The outfit has become a symbol of his journey and a testament to the countless miles and memories he’s collected along the way. Though Charlie may downplay it as just an old, reliable set of clothes, his friends see it as a reflection of his sentimental nature and his unwavering dedication to the biking community.

Building Bridges and Breaking Barriers

Charlie’s vision for Laconia Motorcycle Week—and the wider motorcycling world—has always been about unity. He believes that no matter where you come from, what you ride, or how long you’ve been on the road, every rider shares a common bond. It’s that spirit that drives him to continue advocating for motorcyclists’ rights and to work tirelessly to make every rally a place where riders can come together and share in the experience.

Through his tireless efforts, Charlie has elevated Laconia to new heights, connecting it with the legendary status of Daytona and Sturgis and making it a cornerstone of the national rally circuit. Today, Laconia Motorcycle Week stands not just as an event, but as a testament to the sense of community and solidarity that riders across the country cherish.

A Lasting Legacy

Thankfully for the motorcycling community, Charlie didn’t choose a different path in life. His work has made a significant impact, helping to pave the way for motorcycling to be more than just a hobby but a lifestyle that is respected and understood. His legacy is about more than just rallies and events; it’s about creating a world where every rider has a place, a voice, and a community to call their own.

As he continues to travel the country, meeting with riders and advocating for their rights, Charlie remains true to the values that brought him into motorcycling in the first place: freedom, passion, and brotherhood. For Charlie St. Clair, the journey isn’t over—it’s still just beginning, one rally at a time.
