Buddy Stubbs: A Lifelong Legacy in Motorcycling

Talk about being born into the business—Buddy Stubbs was raised in his father’s Harley-Davidson dealership in Decatur, Illinois, and has spent his entire life surrounded by the hum of engines, the smell of oil, and the unmistakable culture of Harley-Davidson. Today, Buddy is the proud owner of two successful dealerships in the greater Phoenix area and curates a world-class motorcycle museum of his own. With a career that spans from professional racing to business ownership, Buddy Stubbs has become an icon in the motorcycle world.

Buddy’s journey began at a young age. He learned to ride from his father, Carl Stubbs, at the family’s dealership when he was just 10 years old, perched atop a Harley 125. By age 11, Buddy had won his first trophy, setting the stage for a lifetime of achievements in motorcycling. While his father retired as Buddy began his professional racing career, Carl's teachings laid the foundation for Buddy’s success in multiple racing disciplines, including dirt track and road racing.

Racing to Glory

In 1963, Buddy Stubbs made his mark on the racing world by winning the prestigious Daytona 100-mile race. His competitive spirit and skill were evident as he went on to become the first non-Californian to win a race at the famous Ascot TT in 1961. Buddy’s talent extended beyond racing on traditional circuits. He dabbled in desert racing and even did stunt work for Hollywood films, showcasing his versatility and fearlessness on two wheels.

From Racing Legend to Harley-Davidson Dealership Owner

After an impressive racing career, Buddy decided to channel his passion for motorcycles into a new venture. On July 16, 1966, he opened Buddy Stubbs Arizona Harley-Davidson in Phoenix, making it the city’s only Harley-Davidson dealership—a distinction it still holds to this day. Now, 50 years later, Buddy’s dealership continues to thrive, solidifying his legacy as not only a racing legend but also a successful businessman and ambassador of the Harley-Davidson lifestyle.

Buddy’s dealership isn’t just a place to buy motorcycles—it’s a destination for enthusiasts from around the world. The showroom is home to an impressive collection of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and his commitment to the Harley brand is reflected in every detail of the dealership’s operation. Over the years, Buddy’s business has expanded to include another dealership in the Phoenix area, further cementing his influence in the region’s motorcycle culture.

The Largest Motorcycle Museum in the Southwest

Beyond his dealerships, Buddy’s passion for motorcycles extends to preserving the history and heritage of motorcycling. His Phoenix dealership houses the largest motorcycle museum in the Southwest, featuring an astounding collection of 137 historic motorcycles from 35 different brands and 12 countries. The museum’s oldest bike dates back to 1903, making it a treasure trove of motorcycle history. The collection spans a wide range of styles and eras, offering visitors a comprehensive look at the evolution of motorcycling. The museum is open to the public daily, with free admission—a true gift to the motorcycle community.

A Lifetime of Contributions to the Motorcycle Community

Buddy Stubbs has not only excelled in business and racing, but he has also been a dedicated ambassador of the motorcycle lifestyle. Over the past five decades, he has introduced countless riders to the world of Harley-Davidson, fostered a love for motorcycling in his community, and preserved the history of the industry through his museum. His contributions to motorcycling go far beyond selling bikes; he has created a space for enthusiasts to connect, learn, and celebrate the culture that has defined his life.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Buddy Stubbs was honored by being inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum’s Hall of Fame. His career has come full circle, from a young boy learning to ride at his father’s dealership to a racing champion, and now, a custodian of motorcycling’s rich history and culture. Buddy continues to ride, especially enjoying off-road adventures, proving that his passion for motorcycles remains as strong as ever.

For half a century, Buddy Stubbs has been a driving force in the motorcycle world, both on and off the track. His dealership, his museum, and his love for the open road are a testament to a lifelong dedication to motorcycling. The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum is proud to celebrate Buddy Stubbs—a true legend and an irreplaceable part of motorcycling history.
