Honoring a Legacy: Michael Farabaugh’s Impact on the Motorcycle Community
Michael Farabaugh’s journey in the motorcycle world began in the late 1960s, igniting a passion that would fuel decades of dedication and advocacy for motorcyclists’ rights. His involvement with the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and various organizations set a standard for leadership and community engagement, making him a key figure in the motorcycle landscape.
A Passion for Riding
Michael's roots in motorcycling trace back to his participation in dirt riding events throughout the Midwest, where he quickly developed a love for the open road and the camaraderie of fellow riders. His leadership emerged early on, becoming president of District 15 AMA in the early 1970s. Under his guidance, District 15 evolved into one of the AMA's premier road riding programs, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose among riders. In 1972, Michael and his wife Debby founded an AMA motorcycle road riding club, where he served as president and secretary/treasurer for an impressive ten years. This club quickly gained recognition, being named the number one AMA Road Riding Club in the United States in 1979—a testament to their commitment to promoting motorcycling as a way of life.
Advocating for Riders’ Rights
During his tenure with District 15, Michael took on a more significant role by joining the AMA Congress. He actively collaborated with ABATE (A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments) and various legislative affairs, working tirelessly to promote the AMA’s interests within the motorcycling community. Michael was a steadfast advocate for motorcyclists' rights, believing that unity among organizations would strengthen their ability to fight for the rights of riders nationwide, even when it was not a popular stance.
Throughout the 1980s, Michael expanded his influence, serving as Executive Director of ABATE of Indiana, Chairman of the Board of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), and Director of the ABATE of Indiana Rider Education Program. His extensive involvement in motorcycle safety made him a respected figure in the industry, leading to his role as Chief Instructor for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF).Pioneering National Advocacy Efforts
In a groundbreaking move, Michael and his ABATE team organized the first-ever “Meeting of the Minds,” which catalyzed the establishment of a National Steering Committee, chaired by Farabaugh himself. This committee was pivotal in the formation of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, a national organization designed to assist state MROs, educate riders, and ultimately secure enough support to open a lobbying office in Washington, D.C.A Lasting Impact on Motorcycle Safety and Education
Michael’s dedication to advancing the motorcycle community extended into the 1990s and beyond, culminating in over four decades of tireless service to the AMA and ABATE. He was chosen as one of the key teams responsible for developing the Eagles Programs, working alongside AMA Executive President Ed Youngblood and Vice-Presidents to create a curriculum aimed at empowering AMA members and volunteers with a focus on rights issues. In recognition of his unwavering commitment, Michael was honored with the prestigious “Dud Perkins Award,” the AMA’s highest accolade for dedicated service. He received the Freedom Fighter Award in 2004, a testament to his lifelong advocacy. Tragically, he was awarded the same honor in memoriam in 2017, following his passing.
