Fred Kodlin: A Master of Radical Custom Motorcycles and a Legend in the Making

Fred Kodlin has long been at the forefront of pushing the limits of motorcycle design, known for his groundbreaking custom builds, innovative product designs, and unparalleled craftsmanship. From humble beginnings in Germany to becoming an internationally respected name in the world of custom motorcycles, Fred’s journey is one fueled by passion, creativity, and a relentless pursuit of perfection.

Fred’s love affair with gasoline-powered machines started early. At the age of 13, he was already riding and tinkering with motorcycles, cars, and even boats. His first major creation was a custom handlebar for a Zuendapp Supersport, a sign of things to come for the young enthusiast. However, motorcycles were not just a hobby for Fred—they were his calling.

After finishing his apprenticeship as a welder, Fred took a job with a heating company, but the dream of working on motorcycles never left him. Yearning to create something unique that had never been seen on the streets, he pursued a Master’s degree in Vehicle Construction and Blacksmithing. This technical expertise set the stage for the birth of Kodlin Motorcycles in 1984, where Fred started to make his mark in the custom motorcycle world.

As Harley-Davidson’s popularity exploded in Europe with the introduction of the Evolution (Evo) engine, Fred seized the opportunity. He began importing hundreds of Harleys from the U.S., customizing them with his signature style and selling them across Europe. But that was only the beginning. Fred soon shifted gears from simple customization to building full custom motorcycles from the ground up. He began competing at legendary shows like the Rats Hole and Boardwalk Shows in Daytona Beach, earning multiple Best of Show titles and the admiration of his American counterparts.

Fred’s creations were unlike anything the motorcycle world had seen before. He introduced jaw-dropping innovations like Evo engines with two front cylinders, hubless wheels, and hidden brake and secondary drive systems—each bike a testament to his visionary approach. Kodlin Motorcycles became synonymous with craftsmanship and radical design, blending American muscle with European elegance in a way that was distinctly Kodlin.

For over 36 years, Kodlin Motorcycles has been at the cutting edge of the custom motorcycle world, with Fred leading the charge. His hybrid designs, inspired by both American and European aesthetics, are instantly recognizable and respected worldwide. Fred remains deeply involved in every bike build and product cycle, ensuring that his commitment to quality and innovation is reflected in every creation.

In 2020, Fred’s dream of expanding his brand to the U.S. was realized with the incorporation of Kodlin USA, headquartered in Morgan Hill, California. Now, with two international hubs, Kodlin Motorcycles continues to influence and shape the custom motorcycle industry on a global scale.

While Fred has earned countless awards and accolades over the years, one of his proudest achievements is passing the torch to his son Len, who is now forging his own creative path within the Kodlin Motorcycles team. Together, they are continuing the Kodlin legacy, ensuring that their family’s name remains synonymous with cutting-edge innovation and unmatched craftsmanship.

A regular at Sturgis Bike Week since the late 80s, Fred considers the Black Hills of South Dakota his second home. Riding with his fellow Hamsters since 2004 and now being inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame, Fred sees this honor as a crowning achievement of his career. For someone who started by defying convention and chasing his dreams, this recognition is a dream come true.

Fred Kodlin’s story is one of perseverance, passion, and a refusal to settle for anything less than greatness. His induction into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame is not just a personal victory but a testament to his impact on the world of custom motorcycles—a legacy that will inspire generations of riders and builders to come.

Fred Kodlin’s journey is proof that, with vision and determination, even the most radical dreams can become reality.
