Celebrating the Legacy of Mike and Margaret Wilson: A Motorcycling Power Couple

While it’s true that Melbourne “Mike” and Margaret Wilson have made significant individual contributions to the sport of motorcycling, they are best known as a dynamic duo. Their journey through the motorcycle lifestyle is a tale of passion, partnership, and an unwavering commitment to the open road.

The Early Days: A Love Story on Two Wheels

Mike Wilson’s foray into the world of racing began at the young age of 19 in 1939. However, his racing dreams were temporarily put on hold when he was called to serve as a fighter pilot during World War II. Upon returning home to his bride, Margaret, Mike gifted her a brand-new 1946 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, igniting her love affair with riding. The motorcycle, though a bit too tall for her, didn’t deter Margaret. With Mike seated behind her on the buddy seat, he would support the bike when she came to a stop, setting a trend that has seen Mike lowering motorcycles to fit Margaret ever since.

A Shared Vision: Building a Legacy Together

In 1950, the couple opened a Harley-Davidson dealership in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which they successfully operated for 25 years. While managing the dealership, Mike continued to race. He quickly made a name for himself, winning the Iowa TT State Championship in 1956 and entering the Peoria TT race aboard a 74-cubic-inch Harley-Davidson in 1958—the last racer to do so with that model.

Margaret was carving out her own path in the motorcycling world. As a proud Golden Life Member of the Motor Maids, having joined in 1951, she served as Iowa’s district director for the club. In 1958, she earned the prestigious title of America’s Most Popular and Typical Girl Rider, voted by all the clubs in the American Motorcycle Association, further solidifying her place in motorcycling history.

Community and Advocacy: Pioneers of the Sport

The Wilsons didn’t just focus on their own achievements; they were committed to uplifting the entire motorcycling community. Together, they helped establish the Corn State Riders Motorcycle Club, where Margaret served in various roles, including secretary and Road Captain, becoming the only female rider on the club’s Drill Team. Their influence extended beyond the local scene as they sponsored numerous race teams and actively supported several national and local motorcycle associations.

Safety has always been a priority for Mike and Margaret. They were among the first to wear helmets and protective clothing, setting an example for others in the community to follow. Their advocacy for rider safety and encouragement for all motorcyclists made them role models across the country.

Adventurers at Heart: Miles of Memories

The Wilsons have always embraced the spirit of adventure, with Margaret logging over 555,000 miles across the United States and Canada. In 1996, the couple embarked on an epic journey, touring all 48 contiguous states and 10 Canadian provinces in just three and a half months. Their travels reflect not only their love for motorcycling but also their passion for exploring new horizons together.

A Lasting Impact

Mike and Margaret Wilson’s contributions to motorcycling extend far beyond their personal achievements. Their shared love for the sport, commitment to safety, and dedication to community have made a lasting impact on countless riders. As they continue to inspire future generations of motorcyclists, it’s clear that their legacy is built not just on the miles traveled but on the hearts they’ve touched along the way. In celebrating their accomplishments as individuals and as a couple, we honor the spirit of motorcycling that they have so passionately represented throughout their lives.
