The Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club: Pioneers of Sturgis and Guardians of the Open Road
Chartered by the American Motorcycle Association in 1937, the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club has been a cornerstone of motorcycle culture and community in Sturgis, South Dakota. With its rich history and commitment to fostering a love for motorcycling, the club has played a pivotal role in the growth and development of the legendary Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, particularly through its iconic "Gypsies Tour" of the southern Black Hills.
From its inception, the Jackpine Gypsies recognized the need for a structured event that would not only showcase the breathtaking beauty of the Black Hills but also bring together motorcycle enthusiasts from far and wide. The Gypsies Tour serves as an introductory journey, offering riders a chance to experience the stunning landscapes and winding roads that make the region a motorcyclist’s paradise. This tradition continues to thrive, welcoming newcomers and seasoned riders alike to partake in the splendor of the area.
Early on, the club introduced Half Mile Flat Track racing at the Sturgis Fairgrounds, creating opportunities for young racers to earn points and advance their skills. This initiative has been instrumental in nurturing new talent, allowing novice competitors to transition into expert professional racers. As the rally evolved, so too did the Jackpine Gypsies, who expanded their events to include hill climbs, short track racing, vintage TT and motocross racing, and even dirt drags and slow races. This diversification has attracted a broad spectrum of participants, fostering a vibrant community united by a shared passion for motorcycles.
The Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club has always embraced civic responsibility, contributing significantly to the local community. Their efforts include donating fill dirt for the construction of the Sturgis Community Center and parking lot, as well as maintaining active membership in the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce for over 26 years. This commitment to the community extends to local racing families, as the club offers its facilities to support youth development in motorcycling. Kids are given the chance to hone their skills on the oval track or tackle the hill and moguls, all while their parents serve as enthusiastic pit crew members.
In recognition of their outstanding contributions to motorcycle sports and community, the Jackpine Gypsies were honored as the "Top Road Club" by the AMA in 1985, receiving the prestigious AMA Number 1 patch and belt buckle. This accolade stands as a testament to their dedication and impact on the motorcycling world.
For 66 years, the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club has been a beacon of support and passion for motorcycling, family, and community. As they continue to evolve with the sport, the Gypsies remain committed to fostering a spirit of camaraderie among riders and ensuring that the legacy of Sturgis and the joy of motorcycling endure for generations to come. Whether it's through thrilling races, scenic tours, or community outreach, the Jackpine Gypsies exemplify what it means to be a part of the motorcycle family.
